Latest News1959 Wynberg Boys High School - 50 Year ReunionA Successful 1959 matric 50-year reunion celebrations were held in June.
Kevin Barker, from the United States, and Isaac Bloch (Israel) were among the 38 who attended a dinner at the Westlake Golf Club on June 18. Others came from Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Windhoek, Port Alfred, Port Elizabeth and the Western Cape. Special guests at the dinner were two teachers from that era, John Gardener and Alf Morris, and the current headmaster, Keith Richardson, who hosted everyone the next day to a tour of the school and a lunch. Those who attended the dinner were Alf Morris, Keith Richardson, John Gardener, Jan van Dam, Neville Woudberg, Ronnie van Rhyn, Gray Holland, Chris Smith, Alan Berry, Douglas Ziman, Maarten Turkstra, Bruce Hall, Rob Jordan, Manfred Mansfeld, Peter Heritage, Roger Goodwin, Isaac Bloch, Roy Charles, Neil Gauld, Jack Moore, Peter Muller, Glyn Jones, Richard Rowberry, Derek Sinclair, Kevin Barker, Cedric Jackson, Frans Meuwese, James McIlrath, Archie Miller, Allister Thom, Neville Sharpe, Ray Cox, Gerald Phillips, Evert Eek, John Grendon, David Bernstein, Robert McAlpine and Herschel Stein. Hennie du Plessis and Fred Kyritsis had to pull out at the last moment. Keith gave an excellent talk on how things had changed at the school and in education generally. He made sure he had an attentive audience by threatening to read out the end of Standard 9 (grade 11) results. The mention of 12 maths failures (no names) caused a few red faces. Typical of emails received after the celebrations was this one: "Just a short note to express my thanks and appreciation (to the organisers) for getting our reunion together — you should be well pleased with the result! I thoroughly enjoyed both the dinner and the visit to the school and am glad "our roots" are in good hands. Seeing the guys after 50 years was certainly memorable — many of them are as if we had just left school! Thanks again and kind regards." Now everyone is looking forward to the 60th!
