Fritz Bing Honoured - class of 1952

Fritz Bing is a Wynberg Boys' High School product to the core. In 1952 he was appointed Head Prefect of the school. His great love in life (apart from Jenny...) has always been cricket and he went on to play eight matches for Western Province. He continued to serve the game in an administrative capacity and later in his career he was elected as President of the Western Province Cricket Union. As an Executive member of the South African Cricket Union, he accompanied the first post-unity overseas tour to India and a few years later in 1994, he was appointed Manager of the Proteas Touring team to the UK - a team which included Wynberg's Aubrey Martyn. During that tour they came across a young Jacques Kallis straight out of school who did 12th man duties for the South African side in a game against the Minor Counties.

All four of his sons attended this school and (so far) two grandsons. There are still three to go! Fritz has been an ongoing friend of Wynberg supporting all the activities of this school - both sporting and cultural. Many Saturdays see him quietly sitting under a tree watching Wynberg cricket and then in winter sitting (not so quietly) under another tree watching Wynberg rugby. He seldom misses our dramatic productions and music concerts. The popular annual Concert held at Silverhurst, Music at the Manor, was his idea.

For a number of years, he has sat on the Old Boys' Committee and recently was appointed a Trustee of the Union. In this capacity, he continues to serve the school he loves so much.

In an age where our boys need positive role-models so badly, he is the ideal example for Wynberg boys to follow. He lives his life like he has played the game - unselfishly and loyally.

A real team man. We salute a true Wynbergian.
