Dom leads the way for CTCC
Recognised early on as a prolific run-scorer during his school career at Wynberg Boys' High (some considered him as good as Jacques Kallis at the same age), Dominic Telo was consequently already playing first class cricket for Western Province as a 19 year old, and went on to represent the Nasua Cape Cobras as well before signing a two-year contract with the English county Derbyshire in 2008.
At the present moment though, Telo has no first-class cricket obligations to fulfil, leaving Cape Town Cricket Club in the extremely fortunate position of having exclusive claim to his services this season. As a result, although he debuted for the club as far back as January 2005, immediately after his school career ended, this is the first full season that he has been available to them - and he has wasted no time in using his extended stay to rewrite the record books of the past dozen seasons or so.
Telo has already amassed 827 runs in the 15 matches contested by Cape Town across all three competitions thus far in the 2009/10 season, with his ability to make big scores at a rapid scoring rate being instrumental in the club's most successful season since the heydays of the mid-eighties. A batting average of 48.80 combined with a strike rate of 81.33 runs per 100 balls faced has powered Cape Town to a series of impressive totals this season, and his role in the club's five successive Two-Day victories on the trot thus far - a run of success that has taken it to the threshold of the 1B title and with it promotion back to the 1A next season - cannot be overstated.
Telo has already scored six of the eight individual centuries posted by the club's First XI batsmen since he joined it, half of those coming in this season alone. Two of those hundreds were scored in the restricted scope of 45-over format too, a competition in which Cape Town has won all four of its pool matches to qualify for the Semi-Finals. Now only 43 runs adrift of the most runs scored by a Cape Town First XI batsman in any of the past twelve seasons, Telo is perfectly-placed to make that record his own as well - he has potentially six innings still available to him.
This season alone he has already shattered the following Cape Town First XI records of the past twelve seasons:
- the most Limited Overs run in a season (307 to date)
- the most individual centuries in a season (three)
- the most fifties and hundreds in a career (20)
- the highest average in a 500+ run career (38.39 at present)
- the fastest to 2000 career runs (60 innings)
