The brainchild of Union Trustee, Fritz Bing, the Music at the Manor was a huge hit with the crowds and looks to have started a new Wynberg tradition - thanks to all for their overwhelming support!
MC, Steve Doidge (1990) addressed the crowd:
To many people it would appear that the activities of the Wynberg Old Boys Union do not extend much further than the Bill Bowden on the A rugby field. The reality however is far different. The Union firmly believes in the philosophy that 'charity starts at home' and one of its stated objectives is 'to provide moral, emotional and financial support to all members of the Wynberg Family'. Over the last 12 months the Old Boys have been instrumental in assisting Juan Celliers who was paralysed as a result of a tragic accident. Various Old Boys got together and completely renovated his home making it wheel chair friendly and as a result of Old Boy fundraising we were also able to provide him with financial assistance to alleviate his medical bills which are substantial. At present two old boys teach major grade 12 subjects at the school on a pro bono basis whilst many others give up their time and coach numerous sports. The Nussbaum Music centre, which is home to all the musicians you have heard today, would not have been possible without a generous bequest from an Old Boy. In fact the very venue you are at today, Kaplan House, is as a result of the generosity of an Old Boy. The Union provides various scholarships to the school and we are also involved in providing financial assistance to those pupils who cannot afford the various tours the school undertakes on an annual basis. I could carry on detailing the activities of the Union but I think you now have a fairly good idea of the extent of our activities. As you can imagine the cost of providing such support is immense and it is because of generosity at functions such as this which enable us to do the work we do. You can rest assured that your generous financial support of this event will go towards continuing the charitable work of the Union.
