Welcome to our new President,
Steve Doidge (1990)
The Old Boys' Union welcomes Steve Doidge (1990) on board as the new President. Mickey Lumb (1958) will remain on the committee as Vice-President following his years of active service at the forefront of the union.
It is opportune to thank Mickey for his passionate and tireless dedication to WOBU over the past five years. He has also fostered a strong relationship between the union and the school which has formed a solid foundation upon which the Old Boys' Union will continue its mission down the endless chain.
Mickey will still be actively involved in the day to day running of the union's affairs, but has decided to step down to give the younger generation an opportunity to foster and develop the critical capacity to see through growth and continuity within the union for future decades to come.
We know that Steve's role will be an exciting one as he carries on the Wynberg vision with the input and advice of Mickey, whose experience and commitment to the union has been invaluable.
It has been said that the more things change, the more we rely on that which stays the same. Though the world has changed and technology, high mobility amongst our members and a worldwide network provide new challenges and opportunities, the values of the Old Boys' Union remain the same.
Mickey, thank you for your leadership. Steve, we know you will rise to the challenge of taking us into the next decade.

Open Microphone- Rob Louw - 5 May 2010
Yet another successful evening at the Bill Bowden - thanks to Paul Barichievy and the Old Boys' Ladies Catering Committee. It was most entertaining listening to Rob's laid-back renditions of international rugby as it was in his day. We found it most interesting discovering that they were paid R10 for an international game. For once, Gavin Rich could almost not get a word in. Rob has definitely not lost his passion for the school and Old Boys' Union. He also spent a few minutes covering his fight with cancer - quite humbling.

Rob Louw's Celebrate Life Campaign Receives R5000 from Wynberg Old Boys' Union

WOBU financial officer, Arnò Erasmus (1978), presents Rob Louw (1973) with a cheque for R5000 in aid of the Celebrate Life Campaign. The Old Boys' Union Committee salutes Rob for launching this national initiative which makes significant contributions towards helping ex rugby players with critical illnesses and disabilities.
Open Microphone - Gary Kirsten & Paddy Upton
15th March 2010

Another successful Open Microphone series was held at the Bill Bowden with ninety guests packed into the pavilion. The guests were treated to an interesting and entertaining talk with Rob Houwing; chief writer for www.sport24.com as the M.C.
It was most interesting discovering how Gary and Paddy work together with the coaching and mental preparation of the Indian team. Their recipe is obviously a good one as the team has been performing well on the International scene since their involvement.
Keith Richardson, with his usual whit and anecdotes closed the evening. As can be expected Paddy was not let off lightly regarding his Wynberg cricket career.
Thanks to Bill Brown of Cape Photo (021 7616464/ 083 5584210) for the photos. A thank you to Paul Barichievy for once again organising these top quality speakers.

WOBU - Supporting the school

The financial officer for the Union, Arnó Erasmus (1978) and the chairman, Mickey Lumb (1958) handing over a cheque for R89,570 to the headmaster of the high school, Mr Keith Richardson.
"The funds include profit from Bill Bowden sales for the Night of the Stars, annual OBU prizes to pupils of the high school, a full scholarship for a current grade 11 pupil, and a boarding house scholarship for a son of an old boy. Special thanks must go to Tenant Profile Network and Cape Youth Care who, on the initiative of Old Boys, contributed to the scholarships", said Arnó.
Mickey added that "Our primary focus, as a committee representative of 7088 old boys, remains twofold, namely, supporting the high and junior schools to maintain its current top status as the school of choice for quality young men, and fostering the pride and spirit amongst Old Boys of Wynberg".

Jacques Kallis Oval - 26 November 2009
Jacques Kallis (93) was honoured by the school when the cricket oval was renamed the 'Jacques Kallis Oval". Jacques says he is "delighted" to be honoured by his school for his contribution to the game of cricket, "it is a very humbling experience and I feel very proud". The idea of renaming the cricket oval was initiated by the RCL last year and after Jacques went past 10000 runs in test cricket the school decided to go ahead with the idea.
Jacques is now one of the world's leading all-rounders and among the top 10 highest scoring batsmen.
The unveiling of the 'Jacques Kallis Oval" plaque took place during the 20/20 game between the Jacques Kallis XI, led by old boy Aubrey Martyn and also included two other Proteas players, Dave Rundle and Paul Adams and the school's 1st XI. The plaque was crafted by Old Boy, Mike Smit (73) and donated by the Old Boys' Union.

Mendel Kaplan
It is with a sense of shock and deep sadness that we heard of the passing of Mendel Kaplan in Cape Town on Thursday, 19 November. Mendel was a great benefactor and loyal supporter of the School and Old Boys' Union. His interest in the School's achievements throughout the years has really been appreciated by all.
The upgrading of Silverhurst, now Kaplan House, the building of the Bill Bowden Pavilion and the re-siting and refurbishing of the Eric Tasker and Wynberg Heritage Museums in Kaplan House bear testimony to his generosity and ongoing interest. They are a living memorial.
The Union offers its deepest sympathy to his wife Jill and the whole Kaplan family. He will be sorely missed.
